In response to the letter written by Arnold Roth, “Contaminated property,” in the Jan. 19 Record-Eagle, I appreciate the concern over Department of Environmental Quality reports showing lead and arsenic contamination at the new Peninsula Township Park at Center Road. However, I wonder whether the concern is misplaced.
The source of these contaminates originates with large-scale conventional farming practices. Much of Old Mission Peninsula is affected by these practices, including Old Mission School, where most of our tax dollars are hard at work. The Center Road Park offers one safe alternative to protect the land from further development and future pesticide exposure, and truly offers the best and safest alternative for Peninsula Township residents.
Let’s celebrate the work of community members, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, township voters and a beautiful and diverse habitat waiting to be explored.
